These 10 Super fun outdoor activities for kids are easy to put together & are perfect at keeping little ones away from gadgets and screens this summer!

I don’t know about you, but given a chance, Miss P would love to spend all that free time in front of a screen. So, what’s my plan, you ask? Send her outside, of course!

The weather’s a lot better these days, making it the perfect opportunity for some fun outdoor activities that will burn off excess energy and keep our kids away from screens – all while we keep an eye on them. Yup, these are 10 fun outdoor activities for kids that you can do right in your front yard, and you don’t need an elaborate setup either!

1. Shadow Drawing

This is one of my favorite activities to do when it’s sunny outside!

There are two ways to do shadow drawing. One is by placing some toys or objects directly in the direction of sunlight so that their shadows fall on plain paper. Then let the kids trace along the lines of the shadow. Perfect for mornings or early evenings.

Another way is to let the shadow of something large, like a tree, fall on the paper and then trace it out.

2. Hopscotch

There are so many fun ways to modify this classic playground favourite! Instead of simply writing down numbers in the squares, have instructions with some actions – touch your toes, roar like a lion, frog jump or twirl.

Or you could go ahead and have a hopscotch that resembles a maze, swirling up and down your pathway.

3. Messy Art

Have there been times when you’ve stopped your kids from trying out something just because you were afraid of the mess? Well, that’s what the outdoors are for!

Try process art activities like melting crayons, or handprint & footprint art which are bound to make a mess indoors. This is also a great opportunity to use things like twigs, leaves and stones to make sculptures. This paint splat activity from Crafty Morning looks like super fun!

4. Gardening

One of the best things you can teach your kids is how to garden. Get some low maintenance seeds that are suitable for your weather and get planting. Digging the dirt, sowing the seeds, watering and weeding – these are all sensory activities that also provide a good workout!

However, be careful – this is where you can find lots of bugs and mosquitoes, so be sure to stay safe with the right footwear and a good mosquito repellent like the Good knight Fabric Roll-On.

The Fabric Roll-On is a personal repellent – just apply 4 dots on clothes for 8 hours of outdoor protection from mosquitoes. It is non-staining and 100% natural, and has recently been launched in a new citrus fragrance. A hassle-free revolutionary product, this is a

A hassle-free revolutionary product, this is a must have! Better yet, make it a part of your daily routine and use it every time you step outdoors.

5. Giant Bubbles

Bubbles are always fun, but when they’re humongous, the fun is multiplied!

In a bucket, mix together 6-7 cups of water, 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid, a tablespoon of glycerin and baking powder each along with 1/2 a cup of corn flour.

Tie a rope around the top and bottom of two sticks or thread it through two large straws and use it to make your bubbles. For even bigger bubbles, make your mix in a tub and use a hula hoop. Inner Child Fun has some great ideas to make giant bubble wands.

6. Sidewalk Chalk Art

Sidewalk chalk is one of those things that every kid should have! There are so many possibilities with this simple craft staple. Use it to draw hopscotch squares or an obstacle course. Make a treasure hunt with chalk markings.

Make funny art by lying on the ground and drawing crowns, wands or horns. Draw a roadway and take out your bike for a challenging ride. Since the festive season is coming, why not try chalk rangolis too?

7. Outdoor Toys

No, we aren’t talking about buying yet again another set of toys for the outdoors – just take your regular ones outside! Make ramps and roadways for toy cars to drive through or create a rugged surface with dirt for your trucks.

Make a stream for boats or let the little toy animals enjoy some time in their natural habitat – put together with twigs and stones. Give them all a good wash before bringing them indoors! Woo Home has a collection of fun backyard race tracks that are easy to put together.

8. Science Experiments

Science can be messy, and not every home can spare a room to be used exclusively as the science lab. But you don’t need it when the outdoors are available!

Garner solar energy to build a solar-powered windmill, or check the passage of time with a sundial.

Take out a microscope and look closely at the leaves or flowers. Left Brain Right Brain has a cool soil activity to try in the yard. And for all those exploding experiments – this is your chance to try them out!

9. Backyard Bowling

This is perfect if you have at least a small area that is relatively smooth – your Apartment corridor is fine too!

You can make your own bowling pins with plastic bottles weighed down with sand and a regular ball to bowl. A Girl and a Glue Gun uses tin cans to bowl instead of bottles. That’s an activity that should keep everyone busy! If you don’t have as much space as you’d like, you can also try a ring toss – use the same plastic bottles with a simple ring made of any material that’s not too light.

10. Sensory Bins

Wondering how you can keep the little ones occupied? Sensory bins are the easiest and most effective way for toddlers and preschoolers to have fun outside. You can have water-based ones or bins filled with other dry materials. You can stick to a theme or just go freestyle!

Make it more challenging by fishing from one bin to another. We have a list of fall sensory bin ideas you can easily make.
